The pain can sometimes mimic that of a heart attack. Nearly one-third of adult Americans suffers from it. Almost ten percent deal with it on a daily basis. GERD is a digestive problem with a long name.

GERD stands for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. It is a condition where the food pipe (the esophagus) becomes inflamed and irritated from stomach contents.
Stomach Fluids

In GERD---stomach fluids, contents and acids back up. This is called reflux. The main complaint and symptom is heartburn.

Serious Symptoms

Most often the pain that accompanies GERD is heartburn pain. However, in extreme cases doctor care should be sought immediately if there is vomiting with blood, severe chest pain that radiates to the arms, back and/or neck, dark tarry stool and difficulty swallowing.
Causes

The exact cause of GERD is not known, but the following can make it worse. These include smoking, alcohol, obesity, poor posture, blood-pressure medicines, antihistamines, fatty foods, caffeine, eating large meals and eating close to bed-time.
Pregnancy and Diabetes

Pregnancy and diabetes may also cause GERD. A pregnant women will often recover from GERD after giving birth. A hiatal hernia (when the stomach protrudes into the chest cavity) can also cause GERD.
Chronic

GERD is a chronic condition. It is usually a lifelong condition that needs ongoing treatment and monitoring. Treatment may only be necessary when symptoms occur.
