Dangers of Melamine Dishes

Melamine plates are used in many homes because the material is shatter resistant, heat resistant and dishwasher safe. Melamine dishes are also affordable, and come in many colors and patterns. Melamine can also pose a health risk if not used properly. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Composition

    • The reason melamine can pose a danger to those using the dishes is because the two main substances used to make the dishware are melamine and formaldehyde.

    Microwave Use

    • Melamine dishes are not recommended for use in the microwave. The heat from consistent microwave use breaks down the material of the dishes and can lead to leaching of toxins in food.

    FDA

    • The Food and Drug Administration had deemed melamine safe for use in dishware, but melamine has caused issues when it was found in pet food. This caused kidney failure in many of the pets that ingested the substance.

    Considerations

    • Melamine has been found in the human food supply. Some manufacturers have used the substance as an added protein source in very small quantities.

    Safety

    • Dishes made from melamine should never be heated in the microwave to retain its original composition. Melamine dishes that have significant cracks or chips should also be avoided.
