Can I Put My Music on an iPod?

Purchasing an iPod does not mean that you have to purchase all of your music from the iTunes store. You can put your own music on your iPod too. This is done right on your computer using the iTunes program. Once your music is in iTunes, you can sync your iPod to iTunes, which will put the songs on your iPod.

  • If you own CDs that you want to put on your iPod, it is easy to do. Simply open iTunes on your computer, insert your CD and choose the option to import your CD.

Music Files

  • If you have music files on your computer already that you want to add to your iPod, locate the folder on your computer. Then open iTunes and choose the option to add the folder to your library.

Other Sites

  • Some other sites that sell music downloads have an MP3 downloader tool that puts the song right into your iTunes when purchased. If this tool is not available, you can save it to your computer, then add it to your iTunes library.

Garage Band

  • If you create your own music in Garage Band, you can put those songs on your iPod. Simply choose the option "Send Song to iTunes" in the Garage Band application.

Another iPod

  • Music from another iPod cannot be added to your iPod unless it was music purchased in the iTunes store and both computers are authorized under the same iTunes user. If they are, just sync one iPod to iTunes on the other computer, then sync the second iPod as well.
