Facts About Albuterol

Albuterol is a bronchodilator medication that is used to help control the symptoms of certain lung disorders. Albuterol does not cure these disorders but helps to manage the symptoms. Albuterol prevents wheezing and difficulty breathing.

  1. How it Works

    • Albuterol relaxes and opens air passages to the lungs, making breathing easier.

    Indications

    • Albuterol is prescribed for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

    Types

    • You can use albuterol in aerosol form in an inhaler. You also can use albuterol in a liquid solution form in a nebulizer, a machine that turns medication into a mist that you inhale.

    Side Effects

    • Nervousness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, cough and throat irritation are common side effects from the use of albuterol. If these symptoms become severe, report them to your doctor.

    Considerations

    • If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, diabetes or overactive thyroid, you may not be able to use albuterol. Your doctor may prescribe another treatment or use albuterol with strict monitoring.
