Septra Side Effects

Septra is the brand name for a combination antibiotic prescribed to treat bacterial infections. The medication includes sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, and is used to cure urinary tract infections, ear infections, certain types of diarrhea and certain lung disorders. Several side effects are possible.

Most Common Effects

Septra use can cause abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea and diarrhea. Headaches also may occur.

Skin Rash

Allergic skin rashes are common with Septra. Patients experiencing any kind of rash should discontinue using the medication and seek medical attention because severe complications can develop, although rarely.

Unlikely Side Effects

Unlikely but serious Septra side effects include muscle weakness, mood changes, and a goiter, which is a an enlarged thyroid gland appearing as a lump in the neck.

Yeast Infections

Use of Septra, like other antibiotics, can result in an oral yeast infection, commonly called thrush, or a vaginal yeast infection. Signs include white patches in the mouth or a change in vaginal discharge, along with itching.

Colitis

Also like most antibiotics, Septra can cause a severe type of colitis, although this is rare. Symptoms include persistent or severe diarrhea, and abdominal cramping and pain. This can occur during treatment or weeks later.
