What to Wear to Yoga for Men

Look in any yoga magazine and there are multiple advertisements for high-end yoga wear, all specially designed for the serious yogi. The truth is, while those fashions are attractive and do have their merits, they are not necessary. When it comes to dressing for yoga, simple is best. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Comfort and Mobility

    • Choose a fabric that breathes and allows freedom of movement. Avoid heavy fabrics, such as denim, and pants with traditional button and zipper closures. Elastic or draw-string waistbands are best, as are short-sleeved or sleeveless tops.

    Fit

    • Clothes should be well-fitting. Clothing that is too big tends to get in the way, and clothing that is too small constricts movement. Also, ill-fitting clothing is distracting; you will spend more time adjusting than focusing on the poses.

    Tops

    • As a courtesy to the instructor and the female students, please do wear a shirt to class. Simple cotton tank tops and T-shirts are great choices for yoga. Avoid T-shirts with potentially offensive slogans.

    Bottoms

    • Shorts or pants are perfectly fine for yoga, however, shorts offer more freedom of movement. Be mindful of the length of the shorts and wear proper undergarments to ensure coverage during inversions and hip-opening poses.

    Feet

    • Yoga is usually done barefoot, but those who prefer can practice in socks. Just make sure the socks breathe, allow room to spread the toes, are not likely to bunch or twist and provide enough traction.

    Outerwear

    • The body heats up during practice but at the end, during savasana and other resting poses, the body cools. A hoodie, or similar loose-fitting top, is handy for the end of indoor classes---especially in the summer, if the air conditioning is set high.
