Adobe Dreamweaver Alternative

Adobe Dreamweaver is the industry standard Web development tool. But its cost is prohibitive to casual or home developers. Although there is not an alternative that is as robust as Dreamweaver, there are some that come close, three of which are free.

  1. Dreamweaver

    • Adobe Dreamweaver is a Web development application with support for scripting languages such as ASP, ColdFusion and PHP. It combines "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) and code-based design. Dreamweaver is available for the Windows and Mac operating systems.

    Namo WebEditor

    • Namo WebEditor is also a WYSIWYG editor with support for Flash animations. It does not have as many features as Dreamweaver, but it is available for a fraction of the cost. Namo is only available for Windows.

    KompoZer

    • KompoZer is an open-source WYSIWYG editor and is free to download for the Windows, Mac or Linux operating systems. It features integrated file management via FTP, and tabs for switching between WYSIWYG editing and HTML.

    Amaya

    • Amaya is a free combination editor and browser available from W3C, the World Wide Web Consortium. Amaya's focus is on Web standards and on new Web technologies. Amaya is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

    Aptana

    • Aptana is an open-source editor with support for PHP, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, Python and more. It also has plug-ins for Adobe AIR and Apple iPhone. Aptana's community version is free to download for Windows, Mac and Linux.
