The first roller coaster appeared during the early 1800s and involved riders sitting in small cars and rolling down a track. The speed, size and ride of the coasters have changed throughout history, but the basic concept remains the same.

Longest

The longest roller coaster in the world is the Steel Dragon 2000 in Japan. It covers 8,133 feet. The Beast in Ohio is the longest roller coaster in the United States at 7,359 feet.

Fastest

The fastest roller coaster is the Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, which reaches speeds of 128 miles per hour. The Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point in Ohio is the second fastest at 123 miles per hour.

Tallest Descent

The tallest roller coasters are the Griffon at Busch Gardens Williamsburg and SheiKra at Busch Gardens Tampa. These two roller coasters reach heights of over 200 feet and have a 90 degree angle of descent.

Tallest

The tallest roller coaster in the world is the Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure, which is 456 feet tall. The second tallest roller coaster is Cedar Point's Top Thrill Dragster at 420 feet.

Most Roller Coasters

Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio has a total of 17 roller coasters, more than any other park in the world. Six Flags Magic Mountain has 15 roller coasters, making it the second largest grouping of coasters.
