Side Effects of Protonix

Protonix is a brand name for the medication pantoprazole sodium, which is prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease and other acid-related conditions such as stomach ulcers. Distributed by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor that blocks production of stomach acid. Several side effects are possible, but they are not common.

  1. General Side Effects

    • Protonix side effects can include anxiety, coughing, dizziness, headache, insomnia, back or joint pain, lack of energy, nasal irritation, neck pain, respiratory tract infection or sore throat.

    Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Gastrointestinal effects associated with Protonix include abdominal pain, burping, constipation or diarrhea, gas, indigestion, nausea and vomiting.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Protonix side effects that require medical attention include bronchitis, chest pain, elevated liver enzymes and high blood sugar.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Rarely, Protonix may cause a severe allergic reaction with a rash that can progress to blisters and other skin eruptions and peeling skin. There also may be difficulty breathing or swallowing and swelling of the face and throat.

    Pancreatitis

    • Another rare side effect associated with Protonix is pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas. This can be a chronic disorder and may require that patients discontinue using the drug.
