While many people cannot imagine their lives without the Internet, there are some basic safety rules children and adults should follow when on the Web. The online world can be a useful, safe place, if you stick to these tips.

    Misconceptions

  1. Just because you use social networking sites for keeping in touch with friends, don't think that potential employers won't check up on you, depending on what type of job you're seeking. Don't put anything on the Internet that may harm your chances for employment or other high-profile work. Don't put anything on the Internet you wouldn't want the world to see.
  2. Warning

  3. Don't broadcast your home address, home phone number, school name or photo. Chat rooms can be populated by ill-intentioned older people masquerading as teens or young adults.
  4. Prevention/Solution

  5. Parents should use firewalls and monitoring software to make sure that children don't access information, sites or images that they shouldn't see.
  6. Warning

  7. Don't give out personal bank information, such as account numbers or personal identification numbers, credit card information or your Social Security number. If someone solicits this information from you, do not give it out.
  8. Considerations

  9. Parents should keep computers in a public and open area of the home instead of in children's rooms. This way, it's easy to monitor where they go on the Internet.
