Does Rubbing Alcohol Help Acne?

Acne is a persistent and sometimes disfiguring skin problem experienced by teens and adults alike. There are many effective treatments available, but rubbing alcohol is not one of them. While it may appear to work in the short term, it can actually worsen acne and permanently damage the skin. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Basics

    • Acne

Acne occurs when oils near the skin's surface combine with bacteria and dead cells to produce an area of localized swelling known as a pimple.

    Types

    • There are at least five types of pimples, which range from small surface papules to large, hard, pus-filled cysts deep that occur deep within the skin.

    Causes

    • The exact cause of acne is unknown, but hormonal changes, heredity and stress all play some role in its development. It is not caused by a poor diet or lack of hygiene.

    Treatment

    • Successful treatments heal and prevent acne while minimizing damage to the skin; benzoyl peroxide is a good over-the-counter choice. Rubbing alcohol dries out the skin, which actually increases oil production.

    Prevention

    • To prevent acne, cosmetics expert Paula Begoun recommends a daily regimen of cleansing, exfoliating and disinfecting the skin. A prescription medication such as tretinoin may be necessary in more severe cases.
