A double-sized mattress is sometimes referred to as a full mattress or a matrimonial mattress. It is slightly smaller than a queen mattress and is sometimes used as the first mattress for a recently married couple.

    Dimensions

  1. A double-sized bed is 54 by 75 inches. A full-sized mattress is about 5 inches shorter than a queen and 6 inches smaller in width.
  2. Pros

  3. Bedding products, such as sheets and frames, for a double-sized mattress are sometimes less expensive than those for a queen. A double-sized also may be a better option for a small house or room as the mattress will take up about 750 fewer square inches than a queen mattress.
  4. Cons

  5. A double-sized mattress is often fine for a single sleeper, but couples may find it more convenient to sleep on the slightly larger queen-sized mattress. Many find that a double-sized mattress is not large enough for two adults.
  6. Cost Comparison

  7. The two mattresses are similar in cost with the average queen costing about $10 to $20 more than the average full. A good Sealy Posturepedic double-sized mattress set will start at about $500, while a queen set will start at about $515.
  8. Comfort Test

  9. The key when choosing a mattress is to test out the mattress first and find out if the store has a comfort return policy. Choosing a new mattress and deciding between a double-sized or a queen is a big decision, but it shouldn't be a stressful one.
