- A potato ricer is usually about 12 inches long and follows the same basic principles as a garlic press. Boiled potatoes are loaded into the potato ricer and pressed through tiny holes to mash them. There are several different models of potato ricers.
- The French style potato ricer is the model that requires the least arm/wrist strength. The potato loading area has a triangular shape with mesh screens on both sides.
- The rotary ricer has a funnel-shaped mesh lining that potatoes are mashed through with a pestle. It is often used as a juicer and should be placed inside a bowl during use as it can be messy.
- The hinged potato ricer is the most common of the three and works similarly to the French style potato ricer, only it is cylindrical in shape and the holes are located on its bottom.
- To extend the life of your potato ricer, be sure to buy one made of stainless steel so it will not rust.
- Potato ricers also can be used to mash other vegetables such as carrots or turnip and fruits, such as bananas or avocados.
