Causes of Second Toe Numbness

Feet take a lot of beating. The foot is a very intricate and complex structure made up of 26 bones, 107 ligaments, and 19 tendons and muscles. Combined, the 52 bones in the feet account for roughly 25 percent of the body's bones. Many suffer various forms of foot pain and foot disorders.

  1. Types

    • There are many causes of toe pain. Finding the correct cause is not always simple. It is, however, imperative to obtain the correct diagnosis in treating, correcting and preventing toe pain.

    Breaks and Sprains

    • Damage to the toe can cause swelling, bruising, stiffness, tenderness, and pain. The damage can be due to a break or sprain to one of more of the toes which is actually quite common. When a break or a sprain is eliminated as a cause, other common foot maladies may be to blame.

    Morton's Toe

    • When the second toe is longer the big toe, this condition is called Morton's Toe. This disorder can lead to other foot problems along with causing foot pain and distress. Fortunately, Morton's Toe is often alleviated by wearing orthodics.

    Hammer Toes

    • Hammer toes are basically caused by a buckling of the toes. This can lead to pain, corns, calluses, and an irregular walking gait. Flat feet, the wrong shoes, high arches, bunions, and rheumatoid arthritis can all be blamed. Again, foot insoles and the correct shoes are effective treatments.

    Toe Crossover

    • When the second toe glides over and ultimately cross the big toe, it is referred to as crossover toe. Pain in the ball of the foot, swelling and difficulty wearing shoes results. Stretching exercises, rest, splints, toe taping, ice, and anti inflammatory drugs may help.

    Fact

    • Many toe conditions and toe pain can be cured by wearing the right shoes. Have your foot measured by a professional; save the high heels for special occasions.
