Problems With DLP TVs

DLP televisions use rear-projection systems to produce high-definition pictures. DLP is used commonly in movie theaters to produce high-quality images, and the technology has made its way into television sets. While they produce good quality, they also have their drawbacks. Here are a few problems associated with DLP TV sets.

  1. Replacement Bulbs

    • The average life span for a light bulb or lamp in a DLP TV is a maximum of three years and can be as short as one. These bulbs are expensive, ranging from $99 to $350, and soon can add up to be more than the original price of the TV.

    Noise

    • Some DLP sets, especially older models, create loud fan noise that can be irritating to owners. Others can also have a slight hum to them, especially when displaying darker images on the screen.

    Lag

    • With video games and fast-moving pictures, TV screens can show lag in the picture. This is where the motion on the screen falls behind and jumps around as it tries to catch up with what the screen should actually be displaying.

    Size

    • DLP TVs are larger than other HD TVs and can take up more space in the home. Even the newer flat-screen models still range from 10 to 14 inches.

    Viewing Angle

    • The viewing angle of a DLP TV set is lower than other brands. The viewing angle is the angle a viewer must be sitting at in comparison to the TV screen to see the picture properly. A lower angle means the person must be sitting lower than with other TVs if he wants to see the picture.
