Risks When Starting a Business

Starting a business can be an overwhelming experience. There are highs--you're elated that you are your own boss and are in charge of your life. But the risks can be just as powerful in their impact.

  1. Inconsistent Income

    • You must build your own client base. This can take a while when you're just starting out. Plus, there are times when work is slow, and if you do not have enough capital to cover the slow periods, your business will suffer.

    Little Security

    • You are without an employer now. Therefore, you don't have a salary anymore. The security of knowing that you have a consistent paycheck is gone.

    Poor Customers

    • Not all clients pay. If you perform your job satisfactorily but the customer refuses to pay, depending on your services offered you may be able sell the product later. But for now, you're stuck with it.

    High Benefits

    • Health insurance is costly for the self-employed. Unless you land a rare great deal with a health care carrier, or are willing to shell out hundreds of dollars per month for health insurance, you may have to go without it.

    Emotional Stress

    • Running a business can bring you a lot of anxiety and worry. Unless you've got loads of backup capital, you'll worry about your financial security.

    Is it for you?

    • Being a business owner is not for everyone. Before you venture out, consider the pros and cons, then ask yourself if it's for you.
