What Are the Treatments for Penile Scabies?
Scabies is a skin condition resulting from a parasitic infection. It is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, or scabies mites, which burrow into the skin to lay their eggs. The infection causes an intensely itchy, unsightly rash and is highly contagious. The treatments for penile scabies are no different than the treatments for scabies occurring on other parts of the body.

Topical Creams Used for Penile Scabies
-
A doctor will usually prescribe one of several creams that contain a pediculite or insecticide to treat penile scabies. Common prescription creams include permethrin, benzyl benzoate or sulfur in a petroleum jelly.
Treatment With Topical Creams
-
To be effective, topical creams usually must be applied to the entire body from the chin down and remain on the body for the recommended time before rinsing. This treatment is usually effective in killing the scabies mites, but may not stop the itch for some time.

Oral Medication for Penile Scabies
-
Some doctors choose to treat scabies with an oral medication called Ivermectin. It may be prescribed with topical creams or by itself. A single dose of Ivermectin is highly effective in treating scabies of all sorts.
Treatment of Others
-
Because scabies are highly contagious, the doctor will also recommend treatment for family members and others who have close personal contact with the patient.
Preventing Reinfection
-
One of the most important steps in treating scabies is killing any mites that remain in the environment. The mites can be killed by applying an insecticide to bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets and other objects in the everyday environment of the patient.
