What Are Drum Triggers?
A drum trigger is an electronic device that can be attached to various parts of a drum set (bass drum, tom-toms or snare, for example). When the drum with the electronic device is hit or "triggered," it produces a sound or noise that is pre-programmed through a sound module.

Benefits
-
A trigger allows drummers to play at a constant pace, regardless of the physical force used. Using a trigger on the base drum to play fast rhythms (i.e., blast beats) can alleviate some of the physical deterioration that many years of drumming can inflict on a musician.
Considerations
-
Adding a trigger to a drum kit depends on whether it is acoustic or electronic. Triggers may be added to both, but there are different factors involved, depending on the type of kit. Cost is another thing to consider when adding a trigger since it involves multiple pieces (the trigger, sound module, etc.).
-
Effects
-
Drum triggers can reproduce almost any sound there is. After programming the sound module, the trigger can make a sounds anywhere from a chime to a bongo.
Potential
-
Drum triggers are not necessarily the wave of a new drumming future, but it shows the potential of incorporating multi-media aspects into a drummer's repertoire.
Famous Ties
-
High profile drummers, such as Neil Peart from Rush and Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater, use drum triggers.
