Causes of Impetigo

Impetigo is a skin rash condition, commonly affecting children. The blisters often look like pimples with reddish circles surrounding them. These lesions last approximately five days at which point they break down and crust over. Children should be kept home from school until they are no longer suffering from Impetigo.

Communicable Disease

Impetigo is an infectious condition. It is often obtained by contact with others who have Impetigo. Sharing of any bedding, towels or toiletries with an infected individual causes Impetigo to spread. It is highly contagious.

Streptococcus Bacteria

Streptococcus bacteria are the contagion that causes Impetigo. This bacterium often resides in wounds, the mouth and throat, the respiratory tract and the bloodstream. It is also sometimes airborne.

Duration of Danger to Exposure

Streptococcus bacteria may actively live on surfaces for hours and even days. The typical lifespan of this bacterium outside of the body is 48 hours.

Ways to Avoid

Frequently wash towels and bedding and avoid sharing these with others. Do not use public towels after washing your hands.

Treatment

For mild Impetigo simple soap and water will eliminate the symptoms. A physician may prescribe a skin cream for treatment if symptoms are severe.
