What is an RF Modulator Used for?

Many new entertainment devices such as DVD players output signals for direct connection to digital TV. Owners of older TVs with analog antennas or cable inputs l need an RF modulator to bridge the gap between old and new technologies.

  1. Purpose

    • The RF modulator receives the signal from the DVD player, game system or video recorder and filters out the video and audio information. Then the information is used to modulate a TV band transmission signal, usually either on Channel 3 or 4.

    Hookup

    • Connecting an RF modulator is a simple matter of plugging the output of the DVD or other device into the modulator and connecting the output of the modulator to the TV. The RF switch is set to either Channel 3 or 4, depending on which gives the best reception.

    Drawbacks

    • Although RF modulators often accept inputs from stereo sound systems, the audio signal is converted to monaural for the TV. Video quality on older analog TVs don't match modern digital DVD or TV quality.

    Advantages

    • Older or inexpensive analog TVs can find good use in playrooms or workout areas. DVD signal quality is superior to VCR video, even on older sets.

    Expert Insight

    • If a VCR is used as the bridge from DVD to TV, picture quality may be low because DVDs are encoded to prevent copying to VHS. Using an RF modulator improves video performance.
