What Is Bio Freeze?
If you have been injured during a sporting event or are trying to continue training while recovering from an injury you may be familiar with a product called Bio Freeze. You can purchase it through a medical professional such as a physical therapist, chiropractor or athletic trainer or online. It provides quick pain relief that can be used anywhere.
-
Identification
-
Bio Freeze is applied directly to the skin at the site of your pain. It is considered a topical analgesic. Bio Freeze is used to provide temporary and quick pain relief and is not designed to take the place of full medical care for your injury.
Cold Therapy
-
Bio Freeze is a form of cold therapy (or cryotherapy) that cools the area on contact. It works on the premise that cold signals travel to the brain faster then pain signals. The brain puts its attention on the sensations of the cold signals instead of the pain signals. However, unlike ice, it does not constrict the blood vessels.
-
Types
-
Bio Freeze comes in a tube in gel form so it can be massaged into the painful area. It also comes in a spray bottle to make it easier to apply in hard to reach areas. Bio Freeze is available as a roll on which allows it to be applied without touching the product.
Main Ingredient
-
Bio Freeze contains ILEX which is an herbal extract from a South American holly shrub. Herbalists claim that ILEX provides a fast-acting, temporary deep penetrating relief. To date there are no studies to back this claim.
Other Ingredients
-
Bio Freeze may also contain Menthol, Camphor, carbomer, FD&C Blue#1, FD&C Yellow#5, glycerine, herbal extract, isopropyl alcohol, methylparaben, propylene glcol, silicon dioxide, triethanolamine and water.
Uses
-
Always check with your health care provider about how often you can use Bio Freeze. It is not recommended for use on open wounds, burns or those that are pregnant.
