How Does Bulimia Cause Hair Loss?

Bulimia (also known as bulimia nervosa) is an eating disorder that starts off as psychological but can have many physical repercussions. Because of the binge eating and purging, the body suffers from malnutrition along with other dangerous conditions. One of the complications associated with bulimia is hair loss. This is primarily due to the lack of nutrients that the body is getting. There are other several reasons why the hair falls out with bulimia patients.

Vitamin Deficiency

People with bulimia eliminate vital vitamins and nutrients from their body when they purge the food they are eating. The organ that controls hair growth requires enough nutrients to work properly; if it is not stimulating new hair growth, hair loss is experienced when the old hair dries up and falls out.

Bulimia patients are also making their bodies dehydrated. The lack of water causes the hair to become dry and shed.

Bulimia is a psychological disease that can lead to the sufferer being overly stressed. Hair loss is a symptom of stress.

Acid in the Body

The constant vomiting causes problems with the stomach and esophagus. This leads to the body being extremely acidic; healthy hair is hard to maintain in an acidic body.

Poor Blood Circulation

Sufferers can experience irregular heartbeats and other heart problems. This can lead to poor circulation of blood to the scalp; hair starts to shed when it isn’t getting enough oxygen through proper blood flow.
