Types of Network Hardware

Computer networks allow multiple computers to communicate with each other, share files and use a common Internet connection. Networks are common in businesses-- where a common set of files must be maintained--and are popular in homes with high-speed Internet connections. To function properly, networks need many different pieces of hardware.

  1. Method

    • Networks can be set up as wireless, wired or hybrid. Hybrid networks utilize wireless radio transmission and Cat5 cables to transfer data.

    Routers

    • Most networks use a router, which is a central piece of hardware that directs traffic on the network and routes it to the appropriate computer. Ad hoc (peer-to-peer) networks don't use routers.

    Network Interface Card

    • Computers must have a network interface card, or NIC, to connect to the network. The NIC is responsible for sending data from the computer to the rest of the network.

    Range Extenders

    • Wireless networks often require a range extender to increase the transmitting range of a wireless router.

    Modem

    • To share a high-speed Internet connection, a router must be connected to a modem. The modem is usually provided by the ISP but can be purchased with other network hardware.
