What Is Prom Night?

In the United States, prom refers to a formal dance, held at the end of each school year in honor of the graduating seniors. The tradition of the Senior Prom has expanded in the latter half of this century to include an elaborate series of events for most prom goers. Each decade, sometimes each year, seems to bring new and more elaborate events and details to this rite of passage.

Significance

For many students, prom night exists as the single most important social event of the year. It has evolved from a simple dance in the 1950s to a major yearly event that involves a great deal of time, effort, planning and money.

Function

Traditionally, prom night occurs in the spring. The junior class gives the prom for the senior class, and it serves as a gift to graduating seniors.

Features

Along with the prom dance, many students partake in pre-prom dinners and post-prom breakfasts or after parties, limousine transportation, photographs and flowers, all of which create an entire night of special memories for all involved.

Effects

Effects on the wallet of parents continue to grow along with the list of activities. Parents are willing to spend a great deal of money on items such as limousines and expensive attire to be sure that the event is memorable for their student.
