What Is Triple Milled Soap?

Luxury soaps and bath products have become a huge industry all over the world. Triple milled soaps, for example, popular today for their high quality, have been produced for centuries.

Triple Milled Soap

Triple-milled soap is a high-quality type of soap that is commercially made by a repeated machine-rolling process.

The Process

Triple milled soaps, or French milled soaps, are made of a typical combination of a fatty acid (oil or fat) in reaction with lye (sodium hydrochloride). After the soap is made, it is dried into crystals, then rolled at least three times between large stainless steel rollers until a paste is formed. The paste is then pressed into soap molds, and triple milled soap is created.

History

The triple milling process was developed by French soap makers in the 1700s and thus receives its alternate name, French milled soap.

The triple milling process allows for soap that is completely uniform and smooth, without impurities, and is longer lasting than other types of soap.

Commercial vs. Handmade

As opposed to handmade, hand-poured soaps, which can be made by amateurs and professionals alike, triple-milling is a process only available to commercial soap makers with the appropriate stainless steel rolling equipment.
