1980s Teen Fashion Trends

Teenagers from any era will always be influenced by movie stars and pop singers. Madonna gets credit for fishnet stockings and sheer lacy tops. Michael Jackson's red leather jacket from the popular MTV music video "Thriller" ushered in that fashion trend. The movie "Flashdance" made ripped sweatshirts very acceptable.

Legwarmers

Jane Fonda made aerobics popular and the trend of wearing legwarmers. They went from workout to evening wear.

Shoulder Pads

Almost everyone had at least something with shoulder pads. If you wanted to look like you belonged on the football field, then the '80s for made for you.

Mini Skirts

Short and very revealing at times, the mini skirt stayed around for quite a while. Mini skirts were often worn with legwarmers.

Stonewashed or Acid Jeans

Guys and gals wore acid jeans to be in style. Since the acid weakens the threads, holes developed rather quickly. This only added to the style.

Earrings

The guys started piercing their ears to some dismay of their fathers. The girls would not be outdone and started wearing extra large hoop earrings and getting multiple piercings.

Heavy Mascara

Raccoon eyes were very much in fashion. You would not want to leave home without your mascara in place.
