What Kind of Memory Card is Needed for a Camera?

Digital cameras come in many different sizes and styles but to function they need components like batteries and memory cards. There are several different types of memory cards and the type you need for your camera depends on what camera it is.

Compact Flash

Compact Flash cards are high-speed cards used for professional cameras. These cards are used for SLR cameras like the Canon Rebel XTi and the Nikon D200. These are one of the largest memory cards.

XD cards

XD cards are one of the smallest memory cards and they are used exclusively with Fujifilm cameras. Fujifilm is slowly converting to SD cards, but XD cards can still be found in some of the popular models.

SD

SD cards are one of the most common media cards available. They are used in the majority of point-and-shoot cameras, including companies like Canon, Nikon, Samsung and Panasonic digital cameras.

Memory Stick

Sony's exclusive form of media is known as the Memory Stick. Sony digital cameras either take the larger Memory Stick or the smaller Memory Stick duo. These cards are also compatible with the Sony PlayStationPortable .

Internal Memory

Some digital cameras may need no media cards at all. These cameras feature internal memory and all the pictures are stored directly on the camera itself.
