What Dogs Have the Hardest Bite?

Many dogs have a bad reputation for biting. Common culprits are the Rottweiler, German Shepard, and the notorious American Pit Bull. While many fear these dogs and believe their bites are more terrifying than others, this is not the case. Bite studies have shown that the strength of these dog bites are on average the same as any other dog.

Rottweiler

On average, the Rottweiler has been shown to produce 328 pounds of pressure per square inch. According to the Bite Force Competition, this is the highest amount ever recorded for any domestic dog.

German Shepard

The German Shepard bites down at 238 pounds per square inch on average. German Shepards are common guard dogs.

American Pit Bull Terrier

A common myth is that the American Pit Bull Terrier has the hardest bite of any dog with media proclaiming it to be around 2,000 PSI. However, the dog bites down at only 235 pounds.

Wild dogs

The bite study averages wild dogs to have a bite of 310 pounds. This is lower than the average for domestic dogs.

Hyenas

Brady Barr from National Geographic states that the hyena has a bite of 1,000 pounds.

Average

The bite test done by National Geographic has shown that the average domestic dog bites at 320 pounds.
