History of the Ziplock Bag

Ziplock has become one of the best-known brand names in America. Along with Kool-Aid and Jello, Ziploc is almost a staple for the American consumer. Ziploc is just one brand that has made resealable plastic bags over the past 44 years. Glad was the first to make them famous, but it wouldn't be the last to cash in on the food storage bags that contain the locking system to keep in freshness. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. 1954

    • Robert W. Vergobbi introduced the first plastic storage bag with a zipper. It was May 18, 1954, when he patented the idea.

    Minigrip

    • Minigrip took the Vergobbi design and licensed them as pencil bags.

    1957

    • A fifth grader by the name of Robert LeJeune demonstrated the zipper bag's freshness for a science project. He won the National Science Fair, proving that the resealable bag works.

    1968

    • The Ziploc brand was introduced to the public by Glad and Dow Chemical.

    1986

    • A joint venture between ITW and Dow Chemical produced Zip-Pak. The primary function was to manufacture and distribute resealable zipper bags.

    1996

    • Hefty introduced its new resealable plastic bag with a slider zipper.
