Natural Cures for Hyperthyroidism

The thyroid is a hormone-producing gland, and is part of the endocrine system. It is located in the neck, slightly below where the Adam's Apple would be in a man. The hormones produced by the thyroid, primarily thyroxine and triiodothyronine, serve to regulate a number of bodily functions, metabolism in particular. When the thyroid becomes overactive--a condition referred to as hyperthyroidism--it overproduces these hormones and causes increases in the rates of the bodily functions it regulates. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition that causes the thyroid to increase in size. Common symptoms of hyperthyroidism include weight loss, fatigue, depression, hyperactivity and decreased libido. It is commonly treated with prescription medications and surgery. There are natural approaches that can help to manage hyperthyroidism symptoms.

  1. Lemon Balm

    • Lemon balm, an herb of the mint family, can be taken as a tea to help regulate the thyroid. It is believed to inhibit the absorption of thyroid hormones, making it an excellent management tool for hyperthyroidism.

    Avoid Stimulants

    • Thyroid hormones can increase activity in the nervous system, and stimulants like caffeine and nicotine can worsen symptoms.

    Antioxidants

    • The use of antioxidants to help manage the excess thyroid hormones in the blood has shown some promise. Supplements like Vitamin C and green tea (without caffeine) can be taken for this purpose.

    Dietary Changes

    • Some foods--including cabbage, spinach, broccoli, soybeans, dairy and wheat--can affect the proper functioning of the thyroid. Eliminating some or even all of these foods from your diet can help moderate the thyroid dysfunction.

    Acupuncture

    • Acupuncture, a process in which needles are used to stimulate specific points on the body, can help restore hormones to the appropriate levels.
