The History of Dodge Chargers

The Dodge Charger joined the high-performance car boom of the mid and late 1960s and eventually became one of the most popular muscle cars on the American market. Its initial boxy straight fastback styling was dated almost from inception, but it was considered a leaner and meaner machine than its counterparts, the Ford Mustang and Plymouth Barracuda.

  1. History

    • 1966 Dodge Charger II concept car.

Six generations of Chargers were produced during 1966 to 1987. In 2006, there was a four-door retro version. While the Charger was an obvious choice by General Motors to compete against the Ford Mustang, it was pressure from Dodge dealers to have their own version of GM's Plymouth Barracuda that led to its creation.

    Function

    • 1968 Dodge Charger.

The vehicle offered high-performance and a sporty look in a mid-size vehicle, distinguishing it from the traditional two-door family cars.

    Types

    • 2007 Dodge Charger "Bumble Bee" edition.

The "Scat Pack" package adorned the Charger R/T with bumble-bee stripes in red, black or white colors and was equipped with a 440 Magnum or 426 Hemi engine.

    Features

    • Third generation Charger R/T.

In addition to the front grille, which hid the headlights when not in use, the Charger featured four bucket seats and a console stretching from the front to the rear passenger compartment.

    Identification

    • Larger, slightly heavier Charger than from the first generation.

The 2006 models and beyond have done away with two-door versions to accommodate families by offering only a four-door model.

    Size

    • More than any other muscle car, the Charger was known for its big engines with the 375-horsepower, 4-barrel carburetor 440 Magnum, the 318- and 383-cubic-inch V-8s, and the 426 Street Hemi.

    Fun Fact

    • 1969 "General Lee" Charger.

A 1969 Dodge Charger, the General Lee, was featured on the television show "Dukes of Hazzard."
