When Was the First iPod Made?

The first iPod was produced in 2001 by Apple, Inc. The device's design had been pioneered by a team of Apple engineers who, under the orders of Apple CEO Steve Jobs, were directed to create a more user-friendly personal music player. Jobs complained that personal music players available at the time were too large and unwieldy or too small and without functionality. The iPod was designed and built in less than one year, and the original model offered users 5GB of space to store up to 1,000 songs.

    • Since the creation of the original iPod in 2001, Apple has released 14 distinct models over the course of six production generations.

    Fun Fact

    • The term "iPod" was coined by freelance writer Vinnie Chieco who felt the design looked like something from "2001: A Space Odyssey."

    Click Wheel

    • In 2004, Apple released a second type of iPod which was named the iPod Mini. The Mini was the first iPod to feature the iconic "click wheel" navigation system.

    Models

    • The only iPod version to be discontinued has been the iPod Mini. It was replaced by the iPod Nano in 2005 after only two generations of changes.

    Scandal

    • Kane Kramer has confronted Apple on the iPod's patent, stating he registered a patent in 1979 for a plastic music box similar to the iPod's design. Apple maintains that Kramer did not renew his patent and therefore forfeited his rights to the product.
