Install PC Programs on a Mac

Macs are known for their friendly user interface, stability and creative software. However, you cannot run a PC program on the Mac Operating System. This can be an inconvenience if you need certain PC programs for work or school. Also, many games will not run on the Mac Operating System. This is no longer a problem since there are now ways to install PC programs on your Mac.

  1. Boot Camp

    • The Mac Operating System, Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), includes a program called Boot Camp, which allows installation of Windows Vista or Windows XP with Service Pack 2 on a Mac. Windows then runs in a separate partition on the hard drive. PC programs can be installed on that partition.

    VMWare Fusion 2

    • VMWare Fusion 2 is a program that allows installation of Windows XP or Vista on an Intel Core Duo Mac running Mac OS X v10.4.11 (Tiger) or later. With VMWare Fusion 2, users can access both Mac and PC programs at the same time without rebooting.

    Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac

    • Like VMWare Fusion 2, Parallels Desktop 4.0 for Mac is a program that allows users to install Windows XP or Vista on a Mac without having to reboot to switch between the Operating Systems. The Mac needs to be running Mac OS X v10.4.11 (Tiger) or later.

    CrossOver Mac by CodeWeavers

    • CrossOver Mac by CodeWeavers is a program that allows installation of many PC programs right on the Mac without installing Windows. It allows opening of Windows files sent in email attachments right into the browser window.

    Considerations

    • Some PC programs have Mac versions, so installing Windows may not be necessary. For example, Microsoft makes Microsoft Office for Mac, which includes Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
