Home Remedies for Heavy Carpet Stains

Heavy carpet stains are frustrating, especially if you just bought the carpet. If you don't want to use commercial products, or if you need a quick fix and don't have carpet stain remover, look in your kitchen cabinets. You will discover that some of your household products will do the job. Whatever you choose to use, remember to blot the stain--don't rub or brush the stain and don't soak the carpet with liquid. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Ammonia

    • Ammonia is a strong all around cleaner. Mix 1/4 cup of ammonia and 1 cup of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the area and blot with a clean white cloth or paper towels. Repeat the process, if needed.

    Vinegar

    • Mix 1/4 cup vinegar and 1 cup warm water. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and apply it the same way as the ammonia mixture.

    Dish Detergent

    • Dish detergent cleans greasy dishes, so it's a powerful cleaner for stains on a carpet. Put 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent in 2 cups of warm water. Mix and apply the same as the vinegar and ammonia solution.

    Club Soda

    • Club soda is good for water-soluble stains. Drip it onto the stain from the bottle or pour it onto a clean white cloth. Do not pour it onto the carpet. Blot it out with a paper towel or a dry cloth.

    Considerations

    • If the stain is wet, vacuum it with a wet vacuum cleaner first. Then use one of the household mixtures to remove the stain.
