Rice is a subject of folklore and culture. First cultivated in China nearly 6,000 years ago, it has been a prevalent staple throughout Asian history. Archeological evidence shows it was cultivated throughout the Yangtze valley. Rice wasn't introduced to South America until the 17th century by the Spanish. When European settlers came to North America, they brought the tiny grains with them.
