They also have a wider range of sounds and effects to help a beginner try and emulate the sounds of their favorite musicians. Some negative points are that it is more expensive to get started because you need extra equipment to play it, like an amplifier.
Acoustic Guitar

A basic acoustic guitar is cheaper than an electric. You can pick up a cheap three-quarter-length model for as little as $35. They don't need to be plugged, so you don't need to buy an amp. New guitarists starting with an acoustic guitar will find the strings a little sore on their fingers at first.

The bottom line is unless you have a lot of money to invest or are keen to emulate a particular electric guitar player or sound you are better to begin with an acoustic guitar. You don't need any extra equipment to play it, and it is much easier to switch from an acoustic to an electric guitar than it is the other way around.
