How Long After a Divorce Can You Get Married in Oklahoma?
-
State Mandated Six-Month Waiting Period
-
In the state of Oklahoma it is unlawful to marry an individual, other than a divorced spouse, for a minimum of six months after a divorce is granted. The rationale for the law is to provide divorcing parties with a cooling off period during which they can reconcile. Parties are still considered married during this six-month period, and if either party remarries in the state before the waiting period has expired they are guilty of bigamy.

Federal Law
-
According to The United States Constitution, every state must give full faith and credit to the laws of all other states. Therefore if an individual remarries in a state other than Oklahoma, that state's laws must be taken into consideration.
Bottom Line
-
The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled in the case of Copeland v. Stone that a marriage performed outside of Oklahoma within six months of a divorce is valid and cannot be set aside if it conforms to the laws of the state in which it was performed.
