How Long Should You Wear TED Hose?

  1. Overview

At Least One Month After Surgery

    • Patients who have recently undergone surgery generally wear T.E.D. stockings, or anti-embolism stockings, for four to six weeks while they are inactive and recovering. T.E.D. stockings increase blood flow, reducing the risk of a blood clot.

    During Flights or Continuously

    • Some people wear T.E.D. stockings or other compression stockings during airplane flights. Others wear stockings continuously to combat poor circulation. Generally, however, T.E.D. stockings are used in post-surgery recovery, not for everyday use.

    Bottom Line

    • Ask your doctor how long you should wear T.E.D. or compression stockings. Do not swim in T.E.D. hose or use bleach or harsh detergents when washing these stockings. Replace the stockings every four to six months.
