The stereotype of a starving artist, working days as a waiter, is true for many painters, sculptors and others who are freelance. But there are also many companies that employ artists and not only pay a salary but also benefits. According to Indeed, a job search website, the average annual salary for an artist in 2010 is $44,000.

  1. Fine Artists

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook said the median annual salary for painters, sculptors and illustrators was $42,650 in 2008. This group would include book and magazine illustrators; medical illustrators used in medical journals and for teaching; and sketch artists for police stations. Sculptors might be employed to make models for companies that design products such as buildings or cars. The lowest 10 percent of artists made less than $20,780 and the highest 10 percent made $83,410.

    Multimedia Artists

    • The median salary of multimedia artists for 2008 was $56,330. Multimedia artists might provide animation for movies, television shows, video games and advertising. Animators for motion pictures and videos generally are paid more, with a median salary of $65,600.

    Art Directors

    • Art directors made a median salary of $76,980 in 2008 according to the BLS. The highest 10 percent earned more than $154,840. Art directors work at publications, advertising agencies and public relations firms coordinating the efforts of several departments and artists into a cohesive design.

    Graphic Artists

    • The median graphic artist salary in 2008 was $42,400. Indeed, the jobs website, said the national average in 2010 was $45,000. Graphic artists can work for advertising agencies, publications, website design firms and other places.

    Art Restoration

    • Some artists also have jobs that involve protecting and restoring art. It takes an artist to restore pieces that have been damaged due to weather, age or improper handling. The jobs website Simply Hired sets the average salary for art restoration at $58,000 for 2010.
