The stereotype of a starving artist, working days as a waiter, is true for many painters, sculptors and others who are freelance. But there are also many companies that employ artists and not only pay a salary but also benefits. According to Indeed, a job search website, the average annual salary for an artist in 2010 is $44,000.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook said the median annual salary for painters, sculptors and illustrators was $42,650 in 2008. This group would include book and magazine illustrators; medical illustrators used in medical journals and for teaching; and sketch artists for police stations.
