Grant Money for Youth Programs
The federal government, private foundations and corporations offer grants for youth programs. Eligible applicants are almost always municipalities, schools or nonprofit community-based organizations. Government grants are issued periodically throughout the year, and applicants have a specified time period in which to apply before the deadline. Some foundations and corporations offer grants throughout the year.

Carol M. White
-
The Carol M. White grant is from the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of the grants, which are competitive and average about $450,000, is to initiate or improve physical and nutritional programs for students from kindergarten through high school. Schools and community-based organizations must demonstrate that they can make progress toward state educational standards for physical education.
YouthBuild

YouthBuild is a Department of Labor grant program for at-risk youth between the ages of 16 to 24. The program provides training in constructing or repairing affordable local housing for low-income households. Youth spend part of the day on construction and part in the classroom preparing for their GED or earning a high school diploma. YouthBuild also supplies the youth with support services, such as mentoring, employment counseling and community service.

Lego: Youth Creativity
-
Lego Systems, Inc. the American division of the Danish Lego group, has formed the Lego Children's Fund, a nonprofit foundation established to support organizations that encourage youth creativity. The fund award grants to U.S. programs for children from birth through age 14 that encourage the exploration of creativity. Lego gives special priority to disadvantaged and at-risk youth. Grants range from $500 to $5,000 each.
Considerations
-
Grants are competitive and are awarded on how closely an applicant organization matches the guidelines of the awarding organization. There are many thousands of grants and finding the correct match is important, since applications can be very time-consuming. In the case of federal grants, reporting requirements after the grant is awarded can also be very time-consuming. Finally, grants do not solve all fund-raising issues for an organization, since they are often one-time awards to fund programs, not organizations.
