Why Would People Move Because of Retirement?

Many people considering retirement opt for a change in lifestyle and location. Cutting the grass is a chore they wish to exchange for time on the golf course. A big home with all the headaches attached to home ownership is no longer attractive. They wish to direct their energies to maintaining their health and well-being, not their home. Moving to a new location is a big step. Before deciding on a new location, spend extended time visiting to determine if the community provides the services, entertainment, cultural and medical facilities you will need or want as you age.

  1. Health Care Facilities

    • As people age, health care becomes a priority. Senior citizens living in rural communities may consider moving to a larger city in order to access medical facilities. Many small towns have limited health care options. Older citizens who require scheduled health care services, such as dialysis, may find it difficult to travel to access care. Some seniors decide to move to be closer to a caregiver, such as a friend or family member, to help with personal care or health needs.

    Climate

    • Tired of snow and freezing temperatures, many senior citizens choose to move to a temperate climate. Florida, Arizona and California are favored retirement United States destinations. Foreign destinations include Costa Rica, Mexico and the Caribbean. Year-around sunshine, lower cost of living and natural beauty are often the draw.

    Cost of Living

    • Downsizing to a smaller home helps retirees stretch their budget and reduce the cost of home maintenance, insurance, utilities and taxes. Some seniors choose to stay in the same city or state to be close to children and grandchildren. Others select areas that offer recreational opportunities such as golf, fishing, skiing and sailing. For some retirees, cultural opportunities including the theater, art galleries, museums and educational facilities prompt a move.

    Travel

    • Many seniors wish to live their dreams, traveling to destinations that they were unable to reach when employment and raising a family required that they stay close to home. Others wish to spend more time with children and grandchildren.

    Taxes

    • Retirees living in states with high sales taxes, fuel taxes, taxes on retirement income, property taxes and estate and inheritance taxes often opt to move to locations with a lower tax burden.
