Wyoming Hunting Information
The state of Wyoming offers numerous hunting opportunities, according to the state’s Game and Fish Department. The state offers big game hunting opportunities for about 10 species along with numerous small game and game bird species. Hunting any species will require the proper license from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department as well as adherence to the agency's regulations.

Big Game
-
Most of the big game species hunting licenses are issued on a drawing or lottery system. Applications can be made by mail or online. Depending on the number of applicants, leftover licenses for elk, antelope and deer are made available over the counter from the Game and Fish Department.
Lottery Preference
-
Applications for licenses for popular species and districts often exceed the number of available licenses. Applicants who are not issued a license during the drawing accumulate preference points increasing their odds of being drawn in future years.
-
Non-Resident Hunters
-
The number of licenses issued to non-residents is limited by state law. Non-residents are allowed to apply for elk, antelope and deer licenses by the lottery system or leftover licenses after the lottery drawing. Application dates and procedures vary from year to year but are available at the Wyoming Game and Fish Department website.
Small Game
-
Upland game birds, including sage grouse, along with migratory birds are included with fox, coyotes and other small game animals as small game. Dates of seasons, bag limits and license costs vary from year to year and are available at the Game and Fish Department’s website.
Available Hunting Land
-
Hunting is available on public owned lands in Wyoming as well as private lands with the permission of the landowner. Local hunters often know landowners or have family connections allowing them access to huntable lands. Out-of-state hunters often contract with outfitters to gain access to hunting land as well as guiding services and assistance with transportation.
Hunter Education
-
Any hunter in Wyoming born after Jan. 1, 1966 is required to complete an approved hunter education course. These courses are taught in Wyoming although the state also accepts certifications from other states that offer an acceptable safety course.
