Bow Hunting Season in Texas

Bow Hunting Season in Texas thumbnail
There is an archery-only season for certain animals in Texas.

There are three species of game animals in Texas that have an archery season. During these seasons it is unlawful to take these game animals by any other means than by bow. While bows may be used during general open hunting season, they may not be used during muzzleloader-only season.

  1. Traditional Bows

    • Longbows, compound bows and recurved bows do not have a minimum draw requirement in Texas. Draw locks are legal to use during any season when legal archery equipment can be used. Draw locks are used to lock the bow in full or partial draw.

    Crossbows

    • Crossbows may be used by any person during the general open season to hunt game animals. There are a few requirements for crossbows. The crossbow must have a minimum pull of 125 lbs., a mechanical safety and a stock that is no less than 25 inches in length.

    Arrows and Bolts

    • The use of field points, target points and judo points to hunt game animals in the state of Texas is unlawful. Fixed-blade broadheads must have at least 7/8 inch width upon impact and must have a minimum of two cutting edges. All mechanical broadheads must open on impact and have a minimum of 7/8 inch in width.

    Archery-Only Seasons

    • Archery-only season in Texas typically runs from early October to early November. In 2010, the season begins on October 2 and runs through November 5. This season is the same for White-tailed deer, Mule deer and the Rio Grande turkey. These are the only animals with a specified archery-only season.

    Guns and Archery

    • Unless you are certified in the state of Texas to carry a concealed handgun, it is unlawful for you to carry a firearm while hunting with a bow during archery-only season. The only exception to this rule is that you may have a firearm in camp, in a motor vehicle or while hunting lawful game other than the three species specified.

    Archery Stamp

    • Along with your regular hunting permit you will be required to purchase an archery stamp to bow hunt in Texas. This stamp can be purchased with your hunting permit or at a later date from any retailer that sells hunting permits.
