What Is A4 Paper?
A4 paper is one of the most common paper sizes, established by the International Organization for Standardization. A4 is regularly used in Europe, while the United States has its own set of standard paper sizes. A4 is part of the ISO A series of paper sizes and is closest in size to the U.S. letter paper size.

Identification
-
A4 paper has the dimensions of 210 x 297 mm. In U.S. measurements, that's 8.27 x 11.27 inches. A4 paper is commonly used for office documents and printing.
Function
-
A4 paper has a variety of uses. It's the paper size you'll find in most European printers, as it's used for letters, forms and other basic documents. A4 is also the size used for magazine and catalog pages.

A-Series Paper
-
A4, although the most common, is just one standard paper size in a series of logical sizes. The ISO A-series contains eight different sizes. There is a constant height-to-width ratio throughout the series. Therefore, you can fold one size in half and the result will be the next size down. Each A-series paper size serves a different purpose in commercial printing. A0 is the largest size, used for large drawings and posters. The A6 size, measuring 148 x 105 mm, is used for postcards.
Features
-
Because of the constant height-to-width ratio of the A-series paper sizes, A4 paper can be converted easily to other sizes. Folded in half, an A4 sheet of paper becomes the A5 size. Likewise, placing two pieces of A4 paper next to each other creates an A3 size.
Alternative
-
The ISO sizes are not used in North America. Instead of A4, America uses the letter size, which measures 8.5 x 11 inches. Letter-size paper is just a bit shorter and wider than A4 and is the American standard for printer paper and office documents.
