History
-
Historically, the wedding ring was connected to the exchange of valuables at the moment of the wedding rather than a symbol of love and devotion. At that time, marriage relationships were viewed as economic contracts. Diamonds traditionally embody the belief and hope in the infinite duration and possibilities of love. Today, the endless band of diamonds in an eternity ring symbolizes everlasting love.
Features
-
Eternity rings are diamond rings, usually made of gold, white gold or platinum, that feature stones along the outside of the ring. Some rings feature stones only halfway around the band for the comfort of the wearer. Just as some couples will not size a wedding band in order not to break the circle, an eternity ring with stones all around cannot be sized due to the placement of the diamonds within the shank.

Styles
-
There is a wide range of styles available to suit any taste. Milgrain edging features a raised edge on a ring done with a special engraver's tool, resembling the edge of a coin. A bar setting, similar to a channel setting, is a circular band of gemstones that holds each stone in place in long thin bars shared between two stones. A railroad eternity ring has a wide band with a row of tiny diamonds at the top and bottoms edges.
Symbolism
-
In the Celtic tradition, circles had magical functions. Since a circle is essentially a closed circuit, it is reputed to assure protection to all things enclosed within its embrace. The circle is employed magically as a defensive line around cities, temples and tombs to prevent the entry of enemies or evil spirits. For individuals, the protective circle takes the form of a ring or bracelet; it is not merely ornamental, but represents protection or security.
Ring/Knot Connection
-
The origins of the ring are close to that of the knot, a favorite charm in primitive times. Knots were used to cast spells over a person, or against evil spirits, which were believed to cause disease. The magical virtues attributed to rings originated with their being regarded as a simplified form of a knot.
