Grumman Canoe Information

Grumman Canoe Information thumbnail
Grumman canoes are a great choice for many types of water recreation.

Grumman canoes are manufactured by the Marathon Boat Group and are the oldest aluminum canoe made in the United States. Grumman canoes are a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts because of their versatility and unsurpassed safety, as they are virtually unsinkable. Uses range from day trips to shooting river rapids to duck hunting. All Grumman canoes are made of lightweight aluminum for durability and ease of maintenance and are available in several models, style and lengths.

  1. Uses

    • Grumman canoes are extremely versatile and suited to any number of uses. Grumman canoes work well for drift fishing a shallow river and trolling with an electric motor. They are equally suited for float trips, running white water, river camping or a leisurely excursion around a quiet lake. Grumman canoes are a favorite of deer and duck hunters to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible such as an island in the middle of a river or a swamp.

    Features

    • One of the strongest selling points of Grumman canoes is a safety feature they pioneered.
Grumman introduced the design that incorporates internal floatation devices into the canoe's structure that make the crafts almost impossible to sink. This feature allows them to continue to float even when fully swamped. Grumman canoes have optional side motor mounts that make it possible for an outboard motor to be used on traditional v-shaped sterns.

    Models

    • Grumman canoes come in 13, 15, 16, 17 and 19 foot lengths. The shorter models have a wider beam and are designed more for use in gentle waters like lakes. The longer and narrower canoes are designed for faster water uses like river rapids and are the most versatile as they can also be used on quiet waters as well. Grumman square stern canoes are designed with heavier transoms for use with outboard motors and are available in 15, 16, 17 and 19 foot lengths. Grumman also offers an economy line of canoes called the Falcon series.

    Construction

    • Because of escalating costs, Grumman no longer manufactures fiberglass canoes. All exterior surfaces of all models of Grumman canoes are now made entirely of high tensile strength aluminum. All joints are fastened together with aluminum thwarts that are secured with rivets and stainless steel bolts. All contact points are coated with a special marine sealant to insure water-tightness. The sealed stern and bow compartments are filled with high density flotation foam.

    Care

    • Because of their all aluminum construction, the canoes require minor maintenance. Wash your canoe if it gets excessively dirty, or whenever it has been exposed to salt water. Periodically check to be sure none of the rivets or bolts have worked loose. To protect your canoe from oxidation you can use a low abrasive car wax. Protect your canoe from damage by storing it in a safe place or hanging it out of the way.
