-
Punctuality is valued in England, so showing up on time for meetings and appointments will help to make a great first impression. Business meetings often begin and end with a few minutes of small talk, so international professionals should participate in these casual discussion in order to display friendliness.
Negotiations
-
When direct questions are asked during negotiations in England, English professionals may give an indirect or evasive response. Don't be too aggressive or persuasive while the terms of the negotiation are being settled upon. It is also acceptable to use humor in the negotiation process, as long as it is not lewd or unfitting for the workplace. The final decision for business deals are made by the company's senior executives, and could take some time.
Giving Gifts
-
It is not customary to present English professionals with gifts at an initial meeting. However, when invited to the home of a businessperson in England, it is appropriate to bring flowers for the host--lilies should be avoided, as these flowers are used for funerals. Other acceptable gifts include fine chocolates or quality wine or spirits. International professionals should make sure that their gifts are especially presentable and neatly wrapped.
