Ad-Aware was first developed in 1999 to discover errors and elements in Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Ad-Aware in 2000 became one of the first programs to combat spyware and adware. With each major version, the detection engine receives significant updates. Lavasoft releases minor updates throughout the year with new definitions and methods for combating new spyware and adware.
What is Spyware?
-
Spyware is an application on your computer that monitors information, such as keyboard input, system configurations or Internet activity. Spyware will broadcast this information back to the hacker or group that created the spyware. Less dangerous forms of spyware, such as adware, subject your computer to unwanted advertisements.

History of Spyware
-
Spyware is a now well-known term. First used in October 1995 as an attack on Microsoft's business model, it evolved into the meaning that it holds today. At the start of 2000, spyware became a more common phrase as more hackers were developing spyware to track your computer. Spyware has become a much larger problem for users, though simultaneously anti-spyware software, such as Lavasoft's Ad-Aware has improved dramatically.
Different Home Versions
-
The 2010 edition is split into three different versions: Ad-Aware Free Anti-Malware, Ad-Aware Plus Internet Security and Ad-Aware Pro Internet Security. The paid-for 2010 editions contain anti-virus software for the first time. All versions search for, quarantine and then eradicate spyware and adware. However, the paid-for editions now feature additional Internet security.

Lavasoft also releases Ad-Aware Business Edition. The Business edition contains multiple licenses to be installed on a number of computers within a corporation. The Business Edition also allows the administrator to centrally control the operation of Ad-Aware and the Ad-Aware Internet security protection.
