About Miniature Labradoodles thumbnail
The miniature labradoodle has a woolly coat that does not shed.

The miniature labradoodle is a designer or hybrid dog that is produced by mixing a Labrador and a miniature poodle. Labradoodles were first developed in the 1980s by Wally Conron, who worked for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia. He wanted to create a service dog that people with severe allergies could use. He was able to mix the two breeds to develop a hybrid dog that had the benefits of both breeds.

  1. Features

    • Miniature labradoodles vary in height from 17 to 22 inches. Miniature labradoodles weigh 30 to 50 lbs. They have a woolly, curly coat that does not shed, which makes them ideal for people with allergies. The miniature labradoodle's colors include black, chocolate brown, white, cream and silver. The have a broad head with large eyes.

    Function

    • Miniature labradoodles were created in order to mix the temperament of a Labrador with the hypoallergenic nature and size of the miniature poodle. Miniature labradoodles make excellent family pets and companion dogs because of the loyal and happy-go-lucky nature of Labradors. They are commonly used as service dogs for people with disabilities and allergies.

    Temperament

    • Miniature labradoodles are obedient, loyal and highly intelligent dogs. They are good with children and other dogs, as along as they are properly socialized. They are easily trained and do well in agility sports. They are easily housebroken.

    Care

    • Miniature labradoodles require regular brushing of their coat. This will prevent tangles and matting. Since they do not shed, the coat requires clipping once a year. They are a medium-sized breed of dog, so they require an adequate yard to play in. They are a very energetic breed, so they need regular exercise and playtime. They enjoy hiking and running, but it is important to provide adequate water to keep cool due to their heavy, insulating coat.

    Considerations

    • The cross breeding of the two types of a dog leaves miniature labradoodles susceptible to both breeds' health conditions. Labradors are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as hypothyroidism and allergies. Poodles are prone to hypothyroidism, epilepsy, Cushing's disease and Von Willebrand's disease. It is important to purchase miniature labradoodles from a reputable breeder. Miniature labradoodles are designer dogs that are becoming very popular, so they often come with a high price tag.
