Electrolysis
-
Electrolysis is considered a permanent hair removal method that applies an electrical current to the follicles of every individual hair root so it doesn't grow back. A tiny needle-shaped electrode is placed on each hair follicle for a minute while an electrical current passes through the follicle zapping and killing the hair. Tweezers are then used to remove the hair.
Benefits of Home Electrolysis
-
Home electrolysis is the same process using a smaller device. Some at-home units adjust for low and high power for comfort control. As of 2010, you can find at-home electrolysis machines for under $200 which makes it much more inexpensive than going to a professional. Having it at home also lets you choose a time that is convenient for you and lets you do multiple sessions at your own leisure.

Drawbacks of Home Electrolysis
-
Electrolysis is very time consuming since you have to apply the electric current to each and every individual hair. Usually, several sessions will be needed to completely eliminate the hair from one area. It is a painful procedure and results may not be permanent if done incorrectly. Redness and swelling may also incur.
Laser Hair Removal
-
The laser method involves emitting a beam of light to the hair follicle. The energy from the laser light transforms into heat as the hair follicle absorbs it. This kills the hair. Dark hair on light skin works more effectively for laser treatments because dark hair contains a dark pigment called melanin. The laser light is attracted to melanin causing more laser energy absorption.
Benefits of Home Laser
-
The laser method can kill hundreds of hair follicles at one time so the process is much quicker than electrolysis which kills hair one follicle at a time. It is much more convenient to do in-home versus seeing a professional. Also, buying an at-home unit is much more inexpensive than professional treatments.
Drawbacks of Home Laser
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, laser treatments effectively slow hair growth but do not guarantee permanent removal. It typically requires several treatments for longer lasting results. Future maintenance treatments may also be needed. There are risks of the device include redness, burning and scarring if done incorrectly.
